"Pennies from Heaven"

Visitors to this site have been in contact regarding the happy memories they have of the ferry boats.
Many people have commented on how they would cross the river on the ferry and return home using the train. They recalled the tradition when crossing the Forth Bridge for passengers to throw a penny from the carriage window for luck.

I recall this practice which sometimes resulted in my good fortune.
As a young child I would be taken by my mother Jean Penny to an area under the Forth Bridge at North Queensferry. I made the short journey from our home on my tricycle.
We would listen for trains passing overhead then for the metallic sound as the “lucky pennies” hitting the bridge girders as they fell to the ground.
We would then search for the pennies, those collected were then used to purchase sweeties in the local shop.
